I’m planning a day trip to NYC for sightseeing and I’m wondering what is a safe/cheap/smart way to get to the city?

It depends on what part of South Jersey. If you’re near the Jersey Shore you can take the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line. If you’re inland you can take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor. NJ Transit also has various bus routes that run to the Port Authority in New York.
